What is strep throat
A
disconcerting thought: What is strep throat?
Strep throat is
affecting 45% of healthy individuals currently. But what is strep
throat? It is a bacterial infection. For this particular illness,
streptococcus pyogene is given the limelight. It is this bacterium from
which the name of this infection is derived. It occurs when the
pharyngeal diseases are attacked by the bacterium streptococcus. This
attack is the main stimulus of inflammatory reactions. If your tonsils and
lymph nodes swell up, you shall know that you are suffering from throat
infection. But for surety whether; it is a strep throat or not, you have
to know about the other throat infections and their symptoms. Knowing
what is strep throat is not enough. The reason is primarily because of
the very minute differences between their symptoms. Most people are not
even able to distinguish these themselves, so they get some tests done for
their treatment to begin.
Anybody can get
affected by sore throat by this disease but it is more common among
teenagers and children. Besides this, the infection has more severe
affects on children than adults because of differences in their immunity.
It may occur because of damage of the lining of the throat or frequent
heartburns. Frequent heartburns are a cause because they irritate the
throat and the digestive acids rise to the level of the throat, ultimately
resulting in strep throat.
Now let’s get
back to our question as to what is strep throat? It is a very
contagious disease which lasts for about 24 hours if treatment is prompt.
Any delays would lead to a stretch of about two weeks. It is the most
confusing disease of the throat infections as its symptoms are very
similar to other viral infections but require different treatment methods.
As a further
elaboration of our question:’ what is strep throat?’ I am going to
discuss it’s method of treatment. Two type of diagnosis are currently
being done, one more recent than the other. The older one takes 48 hours.
This time lapse is a major problem for the patients as they require
antibiotics within 24 hours. At times, doctors start giving treating them
without waiting for the results but since that cannot be done each time,
there was a rise in demand for another, less time-consuming method. Then
the 15-minute-diagnosis method was discovered. This was not cent percent
accurate because it missed 20% of the bacteria inside but if the reports
were proven to be positive, they could settle for treatment. If they were
negative though, the 48 hour test would have been done for accurate
results.
Since we know ‘what
is strep throat?’ and ‘how to treat it?’, we can now move on to
its aspects. Their availability would be an interesting topic. Did you
know that 20 percent of us have it on our skin regularly? 10 percent of
the children generally have them in their throats. So that must mean that
they are not always infectious.
