Strep symptoms
Are you
really infected?
To understand
any particular disease, it is very important to know its symptoms. It is
because, once we know what kind of a disease we are suffering from, it
gets easier for us to combat it. This helps the patient receive better
quality treatment; and much promptly.
Strep
symptoms are very easy to recognize as they
are quite apparent. Here the symptoms of every type of strep throat
disease are mentioned separately and sequentially; so that you can get a
clear outlook about them. To start with, strep symptoms are
different for every disease caused by our little friend streptococcus. As
far as strep throat is concerned, you will experience sore throat without
any other usual cold symptoms like coughing and sneezing. You will surely
suffer from difficulty in swallowing and fever over 101 degrees. You might
discover white or yellowish spots on both your throat and tonsils. Even
the lymph nodes in your neck will be swelled up. You might experience a
severe headache and shiver uncontrollably. In children, even nausea,
frequent vomits and abdominal pains are known to occur. Strep Symptoms
do not only include the throat infections, there are more sinister ones
whose symptoms are even worse. In the category of skin infections,
impetigo and cellulitis are the main ones.
Impetigo is
when red blisters are etched on your whole body. These sores disappear
soon but they leave thick, yellow-brown golden crusts. Although the
remnants of these crusts heal without any scarring, they make our whole
body itchy. Although in cellulitis, only the legs are infected, the
strep symptoms appear on the whole body. Like
impetigo, red blisters appear in cellulitis as well as shivers, nausea and
high temperatures. The skin becomes hot, red and swollen all at once.
As far as the
ear infection is concerned, a very severe earache is experienced along
with the same nauseated feeling experienced by of all those suffering from
the strep diseases. Next, we have sinusitis to worry about. The symptoms
which will assure you about the whereabouts of this disease are a running
or blocked nose, high fevers and when your head throbs so painfully that
you cannot even move it.
Strep A
infections include pneumonia, sepsis and meningitis. Pneumonia is a lungs
infection so its symptoms include chest pain, difficulty in breathing and
persistent coughing. In sepsis, you might experience rapid heartbeats and
high temperatures. Meningitis means suffering from fevers, blotchy skin,
vomiting, stiffness in the neck region and sensitivity towards light.
These infections are quite common though. The rarer infections in this
category are necrotizing fasciitis, scarlet fever and toxic shock
syndrome. Toxic shock syndrome infects the whole body including all the
vital infections while the fever covers the whole body with red rashes.
The former of the three occurs with an infection of the deepest layer of
the skin which dies as a result. In newborn babies, infections are quite
apparent within 12 hours of birth. They become floppy and unresponsive.
They do not breathe, rather, they grunt. They become irritable and give a
hard time during feeding. Their breathing rate is unusual. I guess that is
all for now. These strep symptoms really help in treatment in the
long run.
Symptoms of
strep
Are those
symptoms of strep?
Irritation and
inflammation are the two most common symptoms of strep. Many of you
might now be wondering about the rest of them. All the strep infections
are derived from that treacherous little creature which apparently looks
so small and harmless, but in reality, it is the originator of hundreds of
illnesses. High temperatures and nausea can also be quite common in them.
Now since we have an over-view of the symptoms of strep, I will now tackle
them individually.
Symptomatic
treatment for the pain and discomfort caused by streptococci needs to be
done within 24 hours or there is danger of spreading. Apart from this,
there are about 6 different groups in which our little friend is
classified but I am going to discuss the symptoms of strep
according to the diseases.
As far as
necrotizing faciitis is concerned, the early signs and symptoms are red
wounds etched over the whole body, severe pain, swelling and common
symptoms mentioned above. In STSS or Streptococcal shock syndrome,
numerous signs are seen; thus the term syndrome is used. Among these are
dizziness amid disorganized or confused thoughts, high temperatures and
severe pain. In about 10% of the affected people, red rashes cover the
body from head to toe. Some people even suffer from abdominal pains.
It is weird to
know that even our tonsils get irritated. As if our minds were not
sufficient in that domain. But yes, one of the symptoms of strep
throat is exactly this. Most of the streptococcus illnesses accompany a
general feeling of illness and discomfort with them. Symptoms of a sore
and strep throat can over lap. Now this gives us another thing to worry
about. What if it is not strep throat? Awareness is one thing, but getting
wrong treatment can surely increase the chances of prolonged illnesses. So
you have to get a proper prescription if you feel unfit.
Inflammation of
the lining of uterus is a common symptom of strep in pregnant
women. Then there is the disease sepsis. Many of you would have the
question: “What is Sepsis?” Sepsis is the condition of our bloodstreams as
the aftermath of streptococcal invasion. It is very common in pregnant
women and those over the age of 65. In some cases, there is a sudden drop
of blood pressure that the patient suffers from sepsis shock and
ultimately death. That is why it is fatal in 25% cases. I will say
repeatedly if I have to, but if anyone ever experiences anything out of
ordinary, like blood pressure fluctuations in the case of sepsis, they
should contact the doctor promptly because these diseases can be can cause
death if left untreated. Similarly, lethargic and unresponsive newborns
should be treated simultaneously to avoid dangerous conditions caused by
Group B streptococci. In the late-onset of the disease in newborns, they
even suffer from seizures, coughing and congestion.
The
symptoms of strep can turn very severe at
times. Precautionary measures will help save thousands of lives.
